March 14 - Pasadena - Cold War Feasts – Eating in Soviet Russia
In coordination with the City of Pasadena’s One City/One Story program, the Urban Forager is channeling Russian and Soviet cuisine! Lara Prescott’s The Secrets We Kept tells an intriguing tale of how Boris Pasternak’s Dr. Zhivago was used as a tool for anti-communist propaganda. The book serves as inspiration for this program rich in food history that tells through taste, the tumultuous history of Russia from its Revolution through the Cold War.
Join Elisa Callow, the Urban Forager and chef Masako Yatabe Thomsen in conversation. Profiled are Russian dishes reflecting the diversity of cultures, climate, and attitudes.
Borscht with Crème Fraiche, Home-baked Rye Bread, Blinis, Pierogi, the exquisite and rare Bird’s Milk Cake, and kvass.
Participation is free of charge. The Urban Forager, Culinary Exploring & Cooking on L.A.’s Eastside will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the program.
